Well, as you can see, I'm almost ready. My flight to Kathmandu departs at 4pm on Wednesday afternoon. Loading gear into duffels, erasing memory cards and charging batteries, saying goodbye to friends has forced what was once just a grand idea, a blurry image somewhat anticipated but completely uncertain, to become a shockingly tangible reality; maybe it's impossible not to feel a bit nervous.

Finally the wind stops. We take advantage with a heavy carry to Camp 2, chopper camp, a triangular plateau next to an ice river at 18,000-feet. That’s how we occupy our first day at base camp. A day of moving. Tear down tents in scalding light. Stuff packs as if you’re insulating walls, every corner filled. It’s two-layer weather today. Polypro and thin fleece are barriers against UV more than temperature. In fact, the immaculate snow reflects such intense heat that I find myself rolling up my sleeves as I walk. I think I forgot to bring a pair of shorts.

In fact, there is no snow for the first 3 miles—only ice and slush—so we have to carry our skis and boots. Strapped to the sides of my pack, tips meeting above my head, the skis make an awkward load. Joss and I are already tall, but the skis make us taller; they catch on high branches as we hike.
